Digital Photography Money Making Tip #10

So you're interested in making money with your digital photography. There are so many ways you can do this. I'm going to tell you about one way in this article. I'm suggesting you make calendars.

Let's discuss the practicalities involved in making and selling calendars.

Schedule: The time to do the photography and market the service is all year round. The time to arrange for the printing is November or December, but check with the printing service to find out their time frames for delivery. Expect them to be busy at this time of year. And of course, the time to be delivering the calendars is mid to late December.

A Printing Service. Early on, you will want to shop around for a good deal with a printing service. Consider quality and reliability, not just price.

If you don't have a local calendar printing service, run a Google search for "get a calendar printed" or "calendar printing".

My Google search turned up several hits. The first hit was a company charging $170.28 for 25 calendars, plus S & H. At that price, you will break even at about $7 per calendar. Sizes vary, so you must decide the size you are planning to produce.

Now, how do you put your digital photography to work to make these calendars? By taking pictures obviously - and here are some suggestions.

Markets for Calendars Created with Digital Photography

1. Churches, Charities and Other Organizations
Contact a church, charity, non-profit or social service organization and pitch the idea of calendars as fund raisers. You charge a set amount for delivering an agreed-upon number of calendars. The organization can resell them at any price they choose. Remind the person who speaks with you that they can resell to their members, on their Web site and to the general public.

You require twelve photographs. You could arrange to take photographs depicting the organization's activities for each month of the year. Or, you could ask the organization to provide photos, which you could digitize if necessary. Alternatively, you could agree upon usng twelve photographs of local scenery or attractions, flowers, wildlife, cute kittens - whatever they think would work.

2. Amateur Sporting Events
Contact the manager of a sports team, especially a children's team, and pitch the idea of taking pictures to generate a calendar. This could be an item the team could sell for fund raising, as mentioned above, or you could simply sell calendars to team members and their families. You will need twelve digital photographs, spaced through the year.

If you are dealing with proud parents, be sure to let them know what a great gift these calendars will make for grandparents, aunts, uncles and other family members.

3. Craft Shows and Specialty Shops
Take pictures of local scenery, attractions or wildlife. Generate calendars, then sell them at craft shows or arrange with vendors and specialty boutiques to sell your product. I suggest you stay away from big department stores, chain stores and supermarkets. You will face too much competition in these venues, and in most cases, you cannot compete with their prices. Try farmers' markets, market places, art galleries, mom and pop book stores, boutiques, art galleries, tourist attractions, and so on.

4. Special Community Events
Is your community planning a special event? An anniversary of something? A reunion? A walkathon or race? A celebration of something?

Contact the event organizers and negotiate a deal to bring your digital photography service to the event. You can take orders for calendars, which you will deliver a few weeks after the event completes.

5. Flower Shows and Gardening Associations
Digital photography and flowers make a natural pair. Contact the organizers or club executive. Offer to photograph gardens and floral arrangements and compile your digital photographs into a calendar. Sell the calendars at the event, or take orders for later.

This is just one money making suggestion. Check the article list for more ways to make money with digital photography.
