So You Want to be a Property Photographer

Anyone wondering how to make money from photography might do well to work as a property photographer. This particular career in photography is among the best paying, but despite the financial attractions, it is less populated than the more popular fields of pet photography and wedding photography.

That is good news for anyone contemplating going into property photography. You will face less competition than your colleagues in other fields, a fact that gives you a leg up right from the beginning. Fewer people choose this niche, perhaps because they believe that property photography is dull, staid and without interest. This is far from the truth. This photographic niche can be extremely varied and compelling.

Less competition is not the only strong point of this particular field. Here are some of the others:

Advantages of Property Photography

  • Minimum Stress

When you are engaging in property photography, you have the blessing of time. You can take as much time as you want to arrange a snapshot. You can take as many shots as you want of the same scene. Often you can arrange your subject to be in good light and showcased with enhancing props. This is not the case in most other types of professional photography

For instance, if you are in sports photography, you are under pressure to capture a quickly moving subject. You may have less than a second to grab that amazing shot that occurred with no warning. You have no opportunity to a reshoot if you miss. If you are a family portrait photographer or a wedding photographer, the shots may be posed but you are under pressure to work quickly and to get it right the first time. You have little opportunity to reshoot if you aren't pleased with the results.

None of this occurs with property photography. Typically, you would be working on your own. You have the luxury of reshootting as much as you want or of spending as much time as you want setting up your camera and your scene.

  • Revenue Gain through Cross Selling

Cross selling is key to making money with property photography. Unlike many other types of photography businesses, the property photographer can use seizes the opportunity to sell his or her services to the client during a shoot. While on location taking pictures of the dwelling place, the photographer can pitch other sales, such as wedding, pet or family portrait photography.

Some property photographers maintain that that the lion's share of their revenue results from referrals to other photographic work.

  • Generating Revenue by Selling Prints

In this respect, property photography is similar to other types of photographic businesses. The property photographer is in a position to bring in substantial sums by selling prints. The photographer's only task is to provide the ability for people to order the prints.

You will do well to set yourself up as the go-between between the client and the processing lab. This also allows you to exert a degree or quality control as well. If time is a consideration, you have the option to outsource the prints completely. It's easy enough to go this if you make the digital pictures available on your web site, and place an Order Prints form where customers can see it easily.
