Make Money with Stock Photography: Start a Stock Photography Business

If you have a camera and know how to use it, why not start a stock photography business? Of all the types of photography businesses - property photography, pet photography, sports photography, wedding photography - this particular type has the lowest risk and the most reliability of generating a steady income.

Stock photography is the activity of licensing or selling photographs to businesses, organizations or individuals who have a need for specific photographs but who do not want to hire a photographer. In many cases, the photographs will be used in marketing campaigns and other entrepreneurial activities.

Thanks to the Internet, the need for stock photographs is even greater than it was before the online world came to be

There are two approaches to having a stock photography business. The first way is to publish your own web site selling or licensing stock photography. The other way is to upload photographs to existing stock photography sites.

How Does Stock Photography Work?

At a stock photography web site, the business owner or other customer can browse or search a database of photographs seeking a photograph of a specific topic.

For example, they might search for "lawn mower." Undoubtedly they will find several photographs of lawn mowers. At this point, they might opt to use one or more.

In this situation, they are not buying the photograph itself. They are buying the right to use the photograph in their marketing materials. The photographer maintains the copyright (unless she has arranged otherwise).

Operating Your Own Stock Photography Business

Starting a stock photography business calls for a considerable outlay of time, money and patience. It is a huge undertaking, and perhaps outside the scope of most novice photographers. It is almost impossible for you to take all of the photographs personally. You require a huge selection of good quality photographs in a vast range of topics.

You would have to negotiate with numerous other photographers and keep accurate, up to date records of all interactions.

On the up side, once you have a fully operational stock photography business, it almost runs itself. At that point, you would likely bring in income for many years with little effort on your part. Unfortunately, it usually takes around twenty-four months or longer to get to that place.

Contributing to an Established Stock Photography Business

It is considerably simpler and more realistic for a newcomer to contribute photos to an established business rather than attempting to start his own.

As mentioned above, stock photography web sites require photos from hundreds of photographers. They call upon the talents of internationally based photographers to meet their high demands for new and varied pictures.

When you contribute photographs, you receive a royalty payment each time a customer licenses or buys the right to use one of your images. The amount you can expect to earn on a single image is miniscule. However, if you are continuously uploading new photographs, you can generate a decent recurring income in a short time.

To upload pictures to a stock photography web site, you must be prepared to contribute only good quality images of subjects that are in demand.

The web site will have a Terms and Conditions page outlining their minimum standards. You must think in terms of the kinds of photographs that a business owner is likely to want. Pictures of your birthday party or your standard vacation shot of the family standing in front of the Eiffel Tower will not be permitted.

It is a good idea to search through the various categories of photographs and identify which category is short of photos. The fewer photographs in a subject area, the more likely your photo will stand out from the others and be selected.
